Three formats, three different audiences

Plenty of people post Stories every day and their follower count never moves. I pulled 30 days of my own account data and found the reason: the algorithm sends the three formats to completely different people.

FormatFollowersStrangers
Stories87%13%
Single-image post92%8%
Carousel post46%54%
Reels4%96%

One account's view sources, 2026/7/15-8/13. Your own ratios will differ, but the direction holds, and this is exactly the mechanism Instagram describes (sources at the end).

Put simply: Stories never land in front of strangers, so posting more of them will not grow your following. Posts get tested on followers first, and only travel outward once they pass. Reels is the only format sent to new viewers by default.

The 30-second check on your phone

1

Open your IG profile and tap Professional dashboard (a personal account can switch to professional for free under Settings → Account type and tools)

2

In Insights, tap See all.

3

Tap Views and scroll down

4

You will see the split between followers and non-followers.

You can check one post too: tap See insights at the bottom left of any post to see where its views came from. Run your last ten posts against the table above and you will know where your content has been going.

Pull a whole month with the API

The app only lets you look at one square at a time. To pull 30 days broken down by format in one go, the way I do, one Instagram Graph API command is enough (you need a professional account plus a Meta developer token):

curl "https://graph.facebook.com/v26.0/YOUR_IG_USER_ID/insights?metric=views&period=day&metric_type=total_value&breakdown=media_product_type,follow_type&since=2026-07-15&until=2026-08-13&access_token=YOUR_TOKEN"

The response splits views by content format × follower/non-follower, which is how the table above was built.

What to do with what you find

Stories run high on followers (over 80% of viewers)

Normal. It was always the channel for the people who already care. Use it to promote your services, share daily life, and collect opinions with poll stickers. Do not expect it to bring followers.

Almost only followers see your posts

That means engagement has not cleared the algorithm's bar yet. A post's job is to build engagement, content that makes followers want to comment and save, and a good reaction is what pushes it outward.

You want strangers to see you

Only Reels goes to non-followers by default. To grow, ship Reels on a fixed weekly rhythm, and remember the first 3 seconds decide whether people scroll away.

AI mix check: hand your account to an AI

Once you have the data, the next step is adjusting the mix. Copy this prompt into ChatGPT or Claude, swap the 【】 parts for your own details, and it will score how healthy your current mix is and lay out next week's posting schedule:

You are an IG content strategy consultant. First, my account: Niche / topic: 【e.g. handmade dessert tutorials】 Current followers: 【e.g. 800】 My last ten pieces, in order, format + topic: 【e.g. 1. Story daily life 2. Single-image post work photo 3. Reels unboxing ...】 How the algorithm works (per Instagram's own documentation): - Stories go almost only to followers, good for conversion and keeping relationships warm - Posts go to followers first, and reach non-followers only if engagement is good - Reels goes to strangers by default, it is the main growth engine - Reference mix for a growing account: Stories 5-7 a week, posts 2, Reels 2 Give me: 1. My current mix, the gap against the reference mix, and a health score out of 10 2. Which format I am shortest on, and what that costs me against my goal 3. A seven-day posting schedule for next week following the reference mix, each slot with a concrete topic direction that fits my niche 4. The one change I can make this week that pays off most
A note: what the AI lays out is a draft. The topic directions have to come from your own real experience. The data decides which format to post, the content is still yours.

The mechanics come from Instagram's official blog (bylined by Instagram head Adam Mosseri):
Instagram Ranking Explained : Feed, Stories, Reels, and Explore are separate ranking systems, and Stories ranks content from the accounts you follow
Shedding Light on How Instagram Works : in Reels, "most of what you see comes from accounts you don't follow"
The percentages come from one account over 30 days (2026/7/15-8/13), not official statistics. Your numbers will differ, the mechanism holds.
