Every line on this page has a first-hand source: Reels Mosseri posted on Instagram, his posts on Threads, and the official Instagram blog. Not secondhand tips floating around online, the original text itself.
If you want to know why your posts aren't getting pushed out, check them against these 6 switches and find which one you haven't flipped yet.
“When it comes to Feed... the top three signals are watch time, likes and sends — in that order.” In plain terms: for Feed ranking, the top three signals are watch time → likes → sends, in that order. — Mosseri IG Reel, 2025-01-21 · Social Media Today report, 2025-01-22
“Sends per reach is one of the most important signals for reach.” In plain terms: sends per reach is one of the most important reach signals. — Mosseri IG Reel, 2024-07 · Search Engine Journal report, 2024-07-03
As you write, picture this: if you sent this to a friend by DM, would they think it was worth their time?
Reach with strangers comes from sends, reach with your own followers comes from likes. To break out, write things people want to pass on: lists, counterintuitive takes, practical substance.
“For Explore, the most important signals are likes, saves and shares.” In plain terms: on Explore the most important signals are likes, saves, shares. (The Feed leans on likes, watch time and sends. Explore leans more on saves.) — Instagram official blog, 2023-05-31 (still the official version)
Write things worth saving to come back to. Lists, steps and templates get saved without trying.
To get pushed to strangers on Explore, you need something that makes people think: can't finish this now, I'll save it.
“For Reels, the most important signal is whether you watch the whole thing.” In plain terms: for Reels the most important signal is whether you watch the whole thing. — Instagram official blog, 2023-05-31
The last second of a Reel has to hand people something. Not an end card, a concrete takeaway they can act on.
Carousels have no published definition, so the industry uses swiped to the last slide as a proxy. Don't let the last slide be a dead end, give the reader something to do.
“For Feed posts, the most important thing we try to predict is how likely you are to spend several seconds on a post.” In plain terms: for Feed posts, the first thing they try to predict is how likely you are to spend several seconds on the post. — Instagram official blog, 2023-05-31
The cover decides everything. Every slide needs one thing worth stopping to think about: a counterintuitive number, a question, one big-type conclusion.
Instagram never published a number (the under 3 seconds gets throttled line going around has no first-hand source, don't trust it), but the goal is clear: get a stranger to stay 2 seconds or more.
“The more you post, the faster followers grow, but quality comes before quantity.” (Mosseri has said the same thing in several AMAs and Q&As.) — Mosseri, various IG Live and Q&A sessions
2-3 carousels or Reels a week, and check each one is good enough before it goes out.
Go quiet for more than 3 days and the algorithm starts throttling you. But forcing out weak posts every day counts against you too. Steady rhythm > daily filler.
“We're going to start reducing the reach of accounts that repeatedly post content from other creators without adding their own original spin.” In plain terms: they are starting to cut reach for accounts that repeatedly repost other people's content without adding a take of their own. (This is where Instagram's original versus reposted call officially kicked in.) — Mosseri official Reel, 2024-04-30 · TechCrunch report, same day, 2024-04-30
Spring 2025, Mosseri added the details: to earn Reels bonus reach a video has to be no watermark / original audio / under 3 minutes / original content / from an account in good standing. — Mosseri official Reel, spring 2025
“Authenticity is becoming infinitely reproducible. That means raw content is proof.” In plain terms: authenticity is becoming infinitely reproducible, which means raw content is the real proof. (With AI content everywhere, real and raw becomes the main line in 2026.) — Mosseri's 20-page IG memo, 2025-12-31 · the matching Threads post · Social Media Today analysis, 2026-01-01
Take stock of your last 5 posts: how many did you shoot yourself, write yourself, first-hand?
Reposting is not just a straight reshare. Clipping someone's meme, taking their take with no read of your own, adding captions and a new layout and posting it as yours, Instagram's originality detection catches all of it.
The 2026 playbook: first-hand footage > a deep read of someone else's take > reposting with your own read >> pure reposting, which gets throttled.
